Navigating the Neurosphere
2008
Exhibition with Corrie Van Sice
Bemis Center, Omaha Nebraska

In Navigating the Neurosphere we regarded the 3000 sq. ft. space beneath the Bemis as a landscape of the mind. The exhibition included a three channel video piece, Mindgames, the meditative video piece, Oculus, the collaborative work, Paper, Rock, Scissors, with my text fading in and out of Corrie’s spirals, and a magical sculpture installation of Corrie's, entitled Field, with polished plaster forms, sparkling leds, and water.

As we began developing this exhibition together we started to think about all the ways in which our minds create a kind of landscape...wandering from the playful field of imaginative ideas to a darker realm where a kind of haunting self-talk threatens to waylay each of us at some time or another, to the calming quiet of a meditative space providing a respite from the constant mental activity that we're engaged in every day.

We were interested in creating an environment that was suggestive of the breadth and vibrancy of this mental landscape, and offer tools to navigate the minefield of the mind. We hoped that viewers might take away the common nature of the vibrant mental energy that we all experience constantly: the sense of discovery and wonder, the constancy of questioning and doubt, and the peaceful sense of falling into nature to find a quiet place.
